Manuka / Kanuka

Manuka / Kanuka is a tree that can vary in size from small and scruby to massive trees. It was used alot by the Maori for tattooing and for birds spears. The europeans have always sought out manuka for its great burning ability.

Manuka is brilliant for burning in pizza ovens and for smoking of fish, and other small goods.

Manuka and kanuka thrives in the dry country side of Gisborne, and left unchecked it can quickly take over good grazing land.

I believe that Manuka is best burnt mixed with pine, and has the abilty to burn all night if the fire box is filled up proir to going to bed.    Manuka/Kanuka offers that beautiful long and slow burn, leaving you a firebox full of glowing embers ready to re-catch the next morning.

Manuka needs a minimum of six months to dry out, our manuka is felled over the winter months, so it can dry over the summer months. Proir to being sold, we check the moisure content with our firewood moisture metre.

Firebox manufacturers say the "standard" for dry firewood for burning means it will have a mositure content of 24% or less.  We ensure all of our Dry Firewood has a mositure content of less than 24%.  We do this by continually taking random samples across our wood supplies.
